Luhmühlen International Horse Trials is an event very close to my heart. Julia Otto and her team put in the most amazing effort to create this beautiful event and its welcoming atmosphere.
I have competed at Luhmühlen for the first time at the World Championships in 1982 - and have enjoyed going back there ever since.
Rutherglen had to miss a few days work in the lead up to the event so I decided not to run him - in my view a perfect preparation is imperative in the lead up to a 4* event and no day can be missed.
I travelled to Luhmühlen with our little "Pocket Rocket" Algebra, having come back from a little break after winning the CCI3* Montelibretti earlier this year. It was great his owners John Glenn and Julia McLean, wonderful supporters of Australian Eventing and the Hoy Team, had the chance to come to Luhmühlen to visit their horse and enjoy the beautiful event.
Algebra did well in the dressage, even though he made some unfortunate mistakes. I am always amazed as to how hard this little horse tries - he is always giving it his everything which makes me so proud of him!
We started out on the cross country on Saturday morning and Algebra jumped great but unfortunately decided to run past a narrow corner at Fence 9. I carried on for another minute, jumping him through another technical line - which he did very well- and retired him. 20 penalties would have left him without any chance of a placing and at the age of 17 he does not need the "experience" of the run. We therefore walked home - disappointed but with the good feeling to have safed his little legs for another day!
